TITLE: Education records

ARRANGEMENT: Alphabetical by topic.
DESCRIPTION: Materials correspondence, minutes, award applications, proposed legislation, and background materials collected primarily by Governor Bangerter's education policy advisor, Colleen Colton which reflect office's projects and policies surrounding public education. Half of the materials are public school applications for the Governor's Awards for Excellence program. Other programs documented here are distance learning, National Governors' Association education initiatives, and Utah 2000. Various issues are also represented: class size, concurrent enrollment, Indian education, testing, and school fee waivers. The Governor set up several committees to deal with education and related issues and some Committees represented here include the Governor's Conference on Families and the committee to acquire the Union Pacific depot for a fine arts museum. The most significant committee is the Teachers Advisory Committee formed to brief the Governor on educational needs. Dr. Colton chaired the committee and kept copies of the agenda and minutes of the meetings plus correspondence and background materials on topics discussed.
GAPS IN THE SERIES: Applications from two of the award winning schools, Pleasant Grove Junior High School and Rees Elementary School, were missing at time of processing.
