AGENCY: Silver Belt Mining District (Utah). Recorder
SERIES: 23968
TITLE: Mining location notices
DATES: 1872-1875.
ARRANGEMENT: Chronological.
DESCRIPTION: The Silver Belt Mining District was organized in 1872 in the area northwest of Cedar City. In accordance with established practice, which Congress enacted into law that year (see Statutes at Large, Treaties, and Proclamations, of the United States of America, vol. XVII, chap. 152), mineral deposits in the public domain were free and open to exploration, and locators of the same had exclusive right of possession. Local mining districts managed mining operations and recorded claims. The Silver Belt Iron Mining District record book begins with a copy of the district by-laws, and then includes notices of location for mining claims in the district. For each notice the district recorder reported the names of locators, the name of the mining claim, a description of the claim, and dates of location and recording.
