AGENCY: Gabel Mining District (Utah). Recorder

SERIES: 24039
TITLE: Mining location notices
DATES: 1893-1894.
ARRANGEMENT: Chronological by date.

DESCRIPTION: The mining location notices books for the Gabel Mining District contain the placer claims of prospectors searching for wealth in southwestern San Juan County. These claims or location notices were filed in accordance with federal mining laws which specified that mineral deposits in the public domain were free and open to exploration, and locators of the same had right of possession (see Statutes at Large, Treaties, and Proclamations, of the United States of America, vol. XVII, chap. 152). For each notice the district recorder reported the names of locators and/or locating agents, the name of the mining claim, a description of the claim, and dates of location and recording. All surviving claims recorded by the Gabel District recorder were recorded between February and September 1893 or in December 1894.
