AGENCY: Williams Mining District (Utah). Recorder

SERIES: 24040
TITLE: Mining location notices
DATES: 1895-1896.
ARRANGEMENT: By-laws followed by location notices, which are chronological by filing date.

DESCRIPTION: The mining location notices book for the Williams District contains a copy of the by-laws for the district, which was organized in December 1895. It also contains notices of location for mining claims recorded in the district from January to June of 1896. For each notice the district recorder reported the names of locators and locating agents, the name of the mining claim, a description of the claim, and dates of location and recording. Location notices were recorded in accordance with federal mining law which specified that mineral deposits in the public domain are free and open to exploration, and locators of the same have right of possession (see Statutes at Large, Treaties, and Proclamations, of the United States of America, 1872, vol. XVII, chap. 152). Local mining districts managed mining operations and district recorders kept a record of claims.
