AGENCY: District Court (Third District)

SERIES: 24870
TITLE: Abstract of judgment books
DATES: 1889-1896.
ARRANGEMENT: Chronological by filing date.

DESCRIPTION: This series contains judgment abstracts filed with the territorial Third District Court. An abstract of judgment is a court document that states how much the loser of a lawsuit owes. Justice of the peace courts as well as other district courts could file an abstract of judgment with the clerk of the district court to serve as a lien upon the judgment debtor and to allow for execution in that district. The records are bound in volumes beginning with an alphabetical plaintiff index and followed by information relating to specific cases. Individual entries contain names of the plaintiff and defendant, court where judgment was issued and often the name of the judge, and the amount of judgment and prevailing party. That information is then followed by a log of the filing dates for individual documents such as the abstract of judgment, executions, or satisfactions.
