TITLE: Landslides areas records
DATES: 1995-
ARRANGEMENT: Grouped by file type, thereunder chronological
DESCRIPTION: This geospatial dataset represents mapped landslides in the state of Utah at the scale of 1:100,000. The data are taken from 1:100,000 landslide mapping of Kimm M. Harty, 30' x 60' quadrangles. Landslides are masses of earth or rock that move downslope by falling, toppling, spreading, sliding or flowing (Varnes, 1958, 1978). Landslides are one of the most commonly occurring geologic hazards in Utah, and have caused considerable damage. This digital geographic data is based on a series of 1:100,000 scale landslide maps intended to provide government planners and officials, land developers, geotechnical consultants, and others concerned with landslide hazards, a guide to areas of known and suspected landslides in Utah. Landslides from both published and unpublished sources were compiled onto 1:100,000 scale topographic base maps as an intermediate step in the production of the 1:500,000 scale Landslide Map of Utah (Harty, 1991). Because of their more detailed scale, the 1:100,000 scale maps provide more information regarding landslide locations than the 1:500,000 scale map. However, the maps provide no interpretations of landslide susceptibility, and should not be used for site-specific decision making without further investigation. In addition, this map is a compilation of mapped landslides, and more landslides are likely to be discovered as detailed investigations continue. Therefore, the absence of a landslide in a given area does not preclude one's existence.
