SERIES: 31066
TITLE: Hmong Project files
DATES: 1980-1990.
ARRANGEMENT: By format, thereunder by assigned project number.
DESCRIPTION: This project began in response to the relocation in Utah of a large number of Hmong and Lahu or Koui (Laotian hill tribe) refugees after the 1975 Vietnamese Peace Fire. Attention was focused on textiles including pa'ndao (flower cloth) embroidery, story cloths, batik, clothing and accessories, basketry and some performance arts. Items were purchased for the State Folk Arts Collection and exhibited at the Salt Lake City Arts Council and in a traveling show called "Flower Cloths & Baskets: The Art of Utah's Indochinese Refugees." For several years, craft sales were held at Christmas time at the Glendinning Gallery allowing artists to sell their work (and that of relatives in refugee camps) to the public. There is also documentation of the Southeast Asian workers at mushroom farms in Fillmore, Millard County.
