TITLE: Grand Beehive Exhibit

DESCRIPTION: During research for the Utah Folk Arts Exhibit and Catalogue, it became apparent that the beehive image was not just Utah's state symbol but a well-loved image with meaning for both early settlers and present day residents. A major exhibit was developed and installed at the Salt Lake Art Center - a center for contemporary art in downtown Salt Lake City. It featured historical and contemporary renditions of the beehive grounded in folk art and graphic art as well as fine art. The work of living artists, both folk and fine artists, as they explored the beehive symbol was exhibited alongside pioneer era furniture and early twentieth century neon signs. An exhibit catalogue was produced and a selection of artifacts from the exhibit traveled to Washington D.C. for display at the Renwick Gallery. The State Folk Arts Collection was established as several objects featured in the Grand Beehive Exhibit were purchased from living folk artists.
