DESCRIPTION: These records were used to initiate action in the Logan City Precinct Justice of the Peace Court. Accessioned under the title "Poll tax complaints and summons," the title was changed to "Complaints and summons" because roughly half of the documents in the post binder deal with other matters, all violations of city ordinance or state law.

Information included in the complaints for delinquent payment of the road poll tax include: name of court and justice of the peace, plaintiff (Logan City), defendant, allegations, prayer for judgment against the defendant for the $2 poll tax and court costs, name of attorney representing the plaintiff, and a signed deposition by the street supervisor stating that the allegations are true, the date subscribed and sworn before the justice of the peace, and the signature of the justice of the peace. Information included in the criminal complaints includes: name of court and justice of the peace; plaintiff (Logan City); defendant; date of the deposition against the defendant; name of individual appearing before the court to make an allegation; date of the alleged violation; statement of the alleged violation citing violation of the city ordinance; the signatures of the deponent and justice of the peace; defendant's name, age, address, occupation, and nativity; whether the defendant is l iterate; defendant's sex and marital status; hour and place of arrest; name of arresting officer; name of officer searching suspect; remarks; when tired; whether trial was by jury; whether defendant was found guilty; sentence; disposition; date when the defendant was released; name of defendant; and case number.
