Scope and Content

This series is a scrapbook of documents relating to the celebration of the International Year of the Child (1979) in Utah. It is likely that this scrapbook was created and preserved by Norma Matheson, who served on Utah's International Year of the Child Advisory Committee. The year 1979 was designated by the United Nations General Assembly to be the "International Year of the Child," a year in which to protect children's rights and to aid children and their communities in the fulfillment of children's needs. Governor Matheson signed a late 1978 declaration which affirmed the ideals of the International Year of the Child and stated that the Utah State Board of Education would work together with the Governor's Office to lead the celebration in Utah. Documents in the scrapbook include Advisory Committee minutes, posters and promotional materials, Governor Matheson's declaration, programs of activities, brochures, newsletters, and newspaper clippings.
