Scope and Content
This series contains correspondence, reports, transition records and other assorted documents detailing the work of the Matheson administration from his inauguration in 1977 to his leaving office in 1985. Also present in this series are letters of recommendation and political endorsements signed by the Governor throughout his terms of service. The series demonstrates the continuation of policies between the incoming Matheson administration and the departing Rampton administration, as well as the development of strategy unique to the Matheson regime. The documents provide a small glimpse into the high demand placed on the Governor and his staff in a number of different matters. Areas of considerable attention in this series include documentation of trips made by the Governor and his staff (including an energy conference attended by Matheson in Alberta Canada), court cases involving the state of Utah in which the Governor acted as representative for the state, the renovation of theKearns mansion into the official Governor's mansion, Matheson's controversial pro stance on the Freedom of Information Act which drew considerable criticism from, among others, Orrin Hatch, and the Governor's role in presiding over the liquor control commission hearing of 1978.
