Scope and Content
This book contains the docket for bankruptcy cases heard by the U.S. Supreme Court for Utah Territory from Dec. 28, 1867 through Sept. 27, 1869. Bankruptcy hearings were conducted under federal laws enacted in 1867. Under federal law, either an individual (including a business) or his creditors could apply for bankruptcy. Hearings were conducted in part directly by the court, and in part by a court appointed Register in Bankruptcy.
In the docket, each case is listed separately with the dates various actions were taken itemized within that listing. Each case includes the name of the bankrupt, names of the attorneys, and whether the bankruptcy is voluntary or involuntary. The actions are briefly noted, usually in a sentence or less. Actions include the filing of a petition, court orders regarding procedures, clerk's order to file copies with the Register, Register's filing of adjudication, Register's issuing of warrants, memo of debts filed by the Register, abstracts of proceeding filedby the Register, etc.
