Scope and Content

These defense records were acquired by the governor's office as part of the state's participation in national defense. The federal government felt grassroots participation was needed to keep domestic harmony. This series contains records from the National, State, and Local Defense Councils, the Selective Service Board and information on the Alien Registration Act. The material is in the form of correspondence, minutes, and legislation. The Defense Council was created to keep domestic peace and prevent such crimes as sedition, sabotage, and espionage. The Selective Service Board was created to conscript eligible men for possible U. S. involvement in World War II. The Alien Registration Act's purpose was to aid national security by enforcing each alien, age fourteen and older, to register by giving identification and fingerprints. Aliens under fourteen were to be registered by parents or guardians but were not required to give fingerprints. A four-month period was given for all aliens toregister.

The records for the Defense Council and the Selective Service Board pertain to their organization. Within the records, information such as the breakdown of power within the Defense Council beginning with the National Council and ending with a city or county Defense Council can be found. The records for the Selective Service Board contain appointments, declinations, and correspondence with the National Headquarters.
