Scope and Content
The San Juan County recorder created an index to provide reference to notices of location and all other mining records he recorded. This master index provides reference by the name of the mining claim and references notices of location as well as deeds, mining and mineral leases, amendments to notices of location, agreements, assignments, court decrees, liquidations, mortgages, mortgage releases, and affidavits showing proof of labor. Information in the index includes the name of the claim, the name or names of locators or owners, the the kind of document, the date it was filed, and the book and page number where recorded. It sometimes indicates the mining district or township in which the claim is located.
Research Note
When providing reference for documents, this index frequently identifies books by letter or number without specifying which series is being referenced. This can become confusing since there are several Books B, C, and D. For example Book D could mean Deed Book D (1900-1910), Mining Claims D (lode claims, 1900-1916) or Placer Petroleum Book D (1909-1911). A researcher might note the date or the type of document for clues about which series to check. It appears that an additional Book D is missing from San Juan County county recorder's record books (circa1908-1910). Possibly there is a missing miscellaneous records Book D, which fills the gap in miscellaneous records, January 1906-April 1910.??The camera operator confused this locations index with the locators index. Microfilm targets at the beginning of books are sometimes inaccurate.
