Scope and Content

This series contains the local registrar's copy of death certificates along with burial-removal permits for the Kanosh Registration District. In 1905 the State Legislature adopted a law providing for the registration of deaths in the state under the direction of the State Board of Health. In accordance with this law, the state was divided into districts that coincided with established precincts. Registrars for each district were appointed by county commissions. Any person acting as undertaker for a deceased individual was to submit a certificate of death to the local registrar. The registrar would then issue a permit for burial or removal of the body from the precinct. Sextons within each precinct were to endorse the permit, verifying burial of the remains, and submit the endorsed permit to the local registrar. The registrar was to make a copy of each death certificate "to be filed and permanently preserved in his office as the local record" and to submit the originals to the State Registrar once a month ("Laws of Utah, 1905," chapter 120).

The registrar's copies were recorded on forms identical to the originals and, like the originals, included such information as the place of death, name of deceased, sex, color, marital status, date and place of birth, father's name and birthplace, mother's maiden name and birthplace, signature and address of informant, occupation, date and cause of death, place and date of removal, and signatures of the registrar and the undertaker.

In addition to copies of death certificates for individuals who died in the Kanosh district this series contains copies of death certificates for persons who died outside the district, but were buried in the district . Some of these certificates were later marked as void, but many were not. Some burial permits were filed with the death certificate and some were kept separately or became separated at some time. The permits document burials in both the Indian Cemetery and the Kanosh Cemetery. Later permits were called Burial-Transit permits.

Gaps in Series

The condition of some of the records in this series is poor and it is apparent that over time some death certificates have been lost from the registers.
