Scope and Content
The Constitution of Utah provides that the Governor shall nominate individuals who, with Senate approval, will fill State and district offices. This applies to offices created by the Constitution or that originate by statue, and whose "appointment or election" has not in other ways been planned.
This series consists of letters from applicants who sought state appointments during the Governor's election campaign and first year in office. Typically, they stated their qualifications, describing their experience and sometimes their education. These were frequently accompanied by letters of recommendation and petitions of endorsement from supporters who praised the applicant's character and competence.
Although Democrats occassionally applied for positions, most applicants stated that they were supporters of the Republican Party, and some requested positions based solely on this support. Others emphasized that their appointment would strengthen the party.
The Republican CentralCommittees of various counties expressed that they would be disappointed if applicants who they supported were not appointed. Counties and districts also stressed the importance of having their communities represented by appointive positions.
Most of the applicants applied for specific positions and expressed that they were seeking the position to be of service to the state. Others emphasized that they would accept any type of position because they were in financial hardship and needed work.
