Scope and Content
This series contains records used to track ownership of and payment for burial plots in the city cemetery. It consists of a ledger containing deeds of ownership for cemetery plots, letters documenting the transition to perpetual care, and an index file of lot owners. The ledger documents such information as the name of the person purchasing the lot, the lot and block number, the date the plot was purchased, and the purchase price. These deeds were signed by the mayor or president of the cemetery, the purchasers, and the city recorder. The letters documenting the transition to perpetual care are form letters sent out to every owner of plots in the cemetery in the year 1940, which was the year the transition occurred. The letters contained a Grant of Right to Level Cemetery plot, which were signed by the owners of the plot as well as witnesses. The Grant of Right was necessary for the city to obtain from the family owners so that the cemetery could be leveled, grass planted, and perpetual care established under the city's purview, paid for by a small fee levied on the plot owners. The index cards, arranged alphabetically, were kept by the cemetery as a way of tracking plots by owner. The cards usually contain the name of the owner of the plot, the plot location, and a note on whether or not the perpetual care fee had been paid and if so, when.
