Scope and Content

This series contains a single book used by the city treasurer to track city finances. It includes entries for receipts and disbursements with a brief description of each transaction. Receipts came in a variety of forms, such as rental of city buildings or property, licensing fees, sale of city bonds, fines, and taxes. Disbursements show up in payments for such expenses as supplies and labor on public works, legal fees, office supplies, and salaries for city staff. The book also includes a list of taxes owed by individuals for 1893 and 1894.

At some point the book served a secondary purpose as part of a historical exhibit in the city building. City staff cut blank (or nearly blank) pages from the book, photocopied historical ordinances from another record onto the blank pages, and attached those pages over existing pages in the book, using contact paper and cellophane tape. The book was on display, opened to the photocopied pages. When the book came to the State Archives those photocopied pages were removed and placed back in their original position in the book.
