Scope and Content
This series contains a register used to record births in the county as reported to the County Clerk. Each entry in the register typically includes the date of birth, sex, race, color, parents, residence, name of informant making the report, and an assigned number. Most of the entries date from 1898-1905, but there are also two anomalous entries for the year 1918.
Beginning in 1898, physicians and midwives were required to keep record of each birth at which they assisted professionally. In their absence, parents were required to make a report. They then reported quarterly to the county clerk or in the case of incorporated cities, to the local board of health and they would in turn report to the county clerk. (Revised Statutes of Utah 1898, Title 57, p. 474-475) In spite of the law, many births were not reported to the county clerk, so the record is incomplete.
In 1905, the state passed a law requiring each county to file a uniform certificate with the State Bureau of Vital Statistics and the system of filing birth certificates replaced the system of recording documented in this series.
Research Note
This series contains three different copies of the Register of Births. There are two different microfilm copies with dates noted in the container list. One has a reel number and may be accessed on microfilm, the other is a preservation copy only. When borrowing the original volume for microfilming, the Utah State Archives also created color digital images which are now available online.
